The "red ring of death" and the e74 error are just two of the many errors that the Xbox 360 can get. If you get one of these problems, then there is a good chance that your system won't work until you get it fixed...meaning you are screwed and can't play anything.
When this happens you should go online and consult a list of error codes to see what the problem is. Then you can either get a guide or send your console to Microsoft to get fixed.
